George Alan Crowder — known as Alan — joined the force in 1953. He always said he was a bobby on the beat around Whalley Range and sometimes Moss Side, before going on to train his colleagues as an instructor in the Driving School. He enjoyed taking them in the police Land Rover up to Glossop to teach them off-road driving.

He retired on a Friday in 1983 and was back at work on the Monday as a civilian clerical officer in the Driving School, where he stayed for nine years before finally retiring in 1992.
